Great topic! Of course I will start out by saying I love 3rdStreetPlaza...:) Why, becuase it's a fresh look at communities, and local interaction focused on our hometown, and nothing else.
However, Twitter, FaceBook, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, Activerain....sheeesh...I could go on! These are always going to be a force for awhile.
I see Social Media (SM) morhphing, and you will see more niche SM sites popping up, and "Google" dollars being allocated to SM. SEO will always have a part in ranking, but according to traffic metrics of all my clients, SM is getting far more traffic than SEO...So my adivce is to get into SM circles, establish your brand...

I am still trying to figure out why I tweet? If we talk to ourselves to hear ourselves speak, do we tweet to read what we write?

Ty, I think that would be a great topic for our next MeetUp. Just yesterday I tried to read my Tweets and received the message that there was an overload of too many TWEETS and to try later. Huh???? That tells me we are all tweeting and we still don't know why we are tweeting. Ya better find a BIG place to meet.

Hello all,
Interesting topic. I'm on LinkedIn, Twitter & Facebook. Twitter is odd for me. I do enjoy reading various updates from people I actually know, but it's basically impossible to sort through it all if you have more than 10 active people on your following list. I was following Guy Kawasaki and the guy updates like 25 times a day - I had to nix him.

I usually use:
Facebook - I find it easy to find and contact people and stay in touch.
MySpace - Never use it anymore, too many indecent friend requests - I like it about as much as spam
Twitter - I use it but can't figure out why anyone follows me? Makes me feel interesting?
LinkedIn - I use it less often than my Facebook, find it hard to get to people - most of the same people I have linked on other sites.
My Blog @ WordPress - Love it but all the other social media takes so much time I am too exhausted by the time that I have finished updating Facebook, Tweeting, Trying to find someone to connect to on LinkeIn and deleting friend reuests on My Space!

I prefer Myspace over most other networking sites. It's easier to change things to one's liking and more user friendly. FaceBook notifications tend to be overbearing, as I get nearly 30 a day. Although, the sheer amount of people on Myspace these days makes it a bit dense to wade through when finding people with similar interests.

Well, I have myspace and facebook pages but don't care for either honestly. Never have tried the others mentioned. Myspace is the teenage craze and I'm no teen. Facebook has too many applications and such and I'd rather leave all them alone. But, if I have to choose one, I check facebook a few times a day. Myspace, maybe once a week.

Twitter - is my #1. I use it to stay connected to what is going on in the lives of my little Twitter community. I am pretty selective on who I follow to avoid overwhelm and to keep up as I read every Tweet of those that I follow. 80% of the people that I follow live in Wilmington. Because the Star News is active, I also use it to stay on top of the news since I don't take time to read the paper anymore. The other day I ran into an active Twitter connection at a party and we looked at each other and I said "I would ask what is going on in your life, but I already know", he replied "Yep" and as two men, we were all good. The benefit as I see it is that I get to be a part of his daily life and keep up with what he is up to at a greater depth that I would have been able to at the party which consists of "How's business?" "Good, Busy!" "Good to hear!" "How is the family?" "Good, how is yours?" 'Good!" "What do you think of the the crab dip tonight?" Because of our Twitter relationship we already have gone way beyond the surface level chit chat and are aware of the intimate details of our lives.
Facebook - My new #2. Facebook has moved into 2nd place recently. It is a awesome convergence my 4 big life networks...Local Business Community, High School Classmates, Church, and my Marine Corps Buddies and their families. Facebook is so wide reaching and crosses so many lines it keeps everything in one place. Other Social Networks tend to develop a following among niches. I am really enjoying connecting with old Classmates from school. As someone who's high school years were a lot of fun and very memorable and then moved 1200 miles away a month after graduation by joining the Marine Corps and marrying a Wilmington native, I lost touch with a lot of school friends. Facebook has allowed me to reconnect with them and see what has come of them. Most have gained lots of weight, a few haven't changed a bit, and some have really blossomed. I really enjoy finding out how they ended up. When I get reconnected I go straight for the pictures!
LinkedIn - #3 A pretty powerful tool, if I had time to use it. I see it as a great place to put detailed professional information about your self so if someone is doing research on you (via a Google search on your name) they can see a detailed resume of your qualifications and recommendations from people who have worked with you as a colleague and a consumer. On a website it doesn't seem appropriate to post your full resume and most people a skeptical of the testimonials that you screen and post. But when you go to my LinkedIn account you see 14 recommendations from local business owners that you know they took the time to post. To me that is far more powerful than a traditional testimonial. The secondary benefit I see with LinkedIn is the ability to type in a name and then if they are on LinkedIn you can see who you know who knows them. Once you have established that someone that you want to know is known by someone else that you know (hope I didn't loose you there, buckle down it gets better) then you can ask the person that you know to introduce you to the someone that you want to know who before you didn't even know that they knew them! How cool is that!!! I am dizzy now. The only challenge is making the time to utilize it to it's full capabilities. I know that recruiters and headhunters use it heavily to recruit top talent.
3rd Street Plaza - #4. I am digging the concept and it is great to localize social media since we don't talk over our fences anymore but I am struggling with having the time to keep up with a completely different social media outlet. I need to figure out how to leverage my other social media activity so that it keeps a presence for me here but only requires me to check in every couple of weeks.
MySpace - #5 - Was demoted by Facebook is all but teminated by 3rd Street. I have only been checking in every couple of months and full of two much weirdness and complication. Quite honestly it is sometimes hard to figure out who people are on there. I will check it every couple of months when I think about it but that is about it.
Maybe more than you wanted but once you got me going it was hard to stop. Looks like I just developed a blog post for myself.

LinkedIn - I find this to be an extremely useful tool from a business/professional perspective as clients have an opportunity to check out background info and especially recommendations from an "outside" source. Similar to what Coach Reggie stated before, people are skeptical about references on your business website. I find this to show much more credibility towards building trust.
MySpace - I started on MySpace a few years ago due to my love of music and my eclectic taste. Having 1,000 "friends" with a large percentage of them bands and musicians, I get to enjoy a great deal of music often before it "hits the streets". Yes, there are a lot of teenagers and younger generation using MySpace but, I find many friends locally that do not have other accounts. It does become frustrating to weed through the junk to get to what's real at times.
Plaxo Pulse - I've been using Plaxo for several years now. The features allowed for uploading my contacts (e.g 1400+) online to a secure location which gave me the ability to access them from anywhere I had Internet access. This was often useful when I have used other people's computers and/or needed to forward someone a person's contact info and was not at my own PC. This is also extremely nice to maintain connection with people who have switched phones, email addresses, physical addresses, etc. as they update and I receive the new info from them and not translated. A must have more me.
Facebook - This is one that I need to better utilize. Many of my personal friends all the way back to high school (we won't count the decades!) have accounts here and this offers a means to stay in touch. Much like MySpace, I find a lot of clutter here and not as much professional/business interaction as I had once thought. Considering the number of others on 3rd Street Plaza that utilize Facebook, I look forward to learning more from each of you as I may.
Twitter - This is a very different beast as far as I can tell. I've been learning a lot and seem to be building a following. The real question is "Where is everyone going?" There is so much useful info here and it has been very enlightening for me personally. BTW, it is how I found 3rd Street Plaza!
Flickr - I started using this to learn what value it holds. Not as impressed and not using it nearly as much as others mentioned above.
Delicious - This has been like a roller coaster regarding readers. Sometimes I can't seem to get others to even notice and other times it is like a tidal wave. Obviously, I have a LOT to learn here. Would appreciate opinions and/or insight some of you may have regarding this site.
3rd Street Plaza - I have many friends in the Wilmington, NC region and have found many online contacts who call Wilmington home. As stated above, a Twitter link is what pointed me here to begin with. I do look forward to learning more about this social media site. As Ty Downing stated here, this is local interaction focused on our hometown. Looks like a very good start with some quality talent to make it happen.
