What is a Twestival? Think Twitter + Festival. Find out more and buy tickets (100% proceeds go to charity:water) here: http://wilmington.twestival.com/
We've only got less than 2 weeks to plan this big event! But what is it?
Here's some FAQs:
Q: What is Twestival 2009? A: Twestival is a world-wide event held on Feb. 12 each year. It started in the U.K. and other cities across the globe last year and was organized in less than two weeks. The power of social media makes that possible. Twestival is like a "tweet-up" of local Twitter users and others in the online community, but it's much bigger and supports a social cause. (If you're not familiar with Twitter, refer to the last question).
Q: What charity does it support? A: 100% of the proceeds from these events world-wide supports the charity called charity:water. Charity:water is a charity that brings clean, safe drinking water to developing countries. You can read more about the charity here: http://www.charitywater.org/
Q: Where will this event be held locally and when? A: It will be held on Feb. 12, when all cities across the world are holding the same event.
Here are Wilmington Twestival's details: Place: Port City Pub, 121 Grace Street in downtown Wilmington Time: 6-10 p.m. Feb. 12. Perfect for the after-work crowd and anyone who wants to drop by! Price: $15 if you purchase tickets online in advance at http://wilmington.twestival.com, or $20 at the door. Includes: Free beer, non-alcoholic drinks, and food from area restaurants. Entertainment, including kareokee, and door prizes (think: iPods, etc.) are also included! But the main purpose is getting together for a night of fun, networking, charity and meeting the faces behind the avatars!
Q: Okay, what the heck is Twitter?
It's a growing online phenomenon that allows you to answer the question: "What are you doing?" with any answer you want - as long as it's under 140 characters. It's basically called a micro-blog, and people add followers who have similar interests or who live in the same towns. You can reply to one another, share information such as links and blogs and discuss anything you want. Newspapers are using this as a way to connect to readers and get out news items in a new, innovative way. For more information, go to www.twitter.com.

Hey guys, please head over the Grove Project's website and help me explain to these guys what Twestival is all about. Check out the comments section. But seriously, the Grove Project is a nice addition to the Wilmington scene and definitely a site to keep an eye on for local news.

I'm sure we'll be coming up with a volunteer list. I know we will need people to take tickets, money at the door, and people to clean up. Also we'll need volunteers to get the word out and probably help with finding venues, donations from bars/restaurants and entertainment. Ty Downing, chief organizer for the event, will be able to tell you more. But check this site as more information becomes available!
