Yes you can!
One of the sayings that I absolutely love is that "God does answer your prayers, it's just that sometimes the answer is no". If you take that and add a basic Einstein principle based on the Theory of Spacetime and put them together - in my world it equals = if you put something into action, although sometimes they may not work, they have a momentum of their own and are limited by our own perception of time. A little deep for a Friday but, today I am celebrating one of these moments. So, simply put, I sometimes feel like I do all these things, although not all pan out, many have an impact, just not when I want them to.
Over the past 4 years (of my time) I have felt like I have taken 5 steps at a time but only really landed 1. Because I do so much, most of which do not harvest immediate results, I feel like I am not having an impact or influencing results. Many times we give up, sometimes we become complacent and don't even bother. Don't succumb to either impulse, not matter how discouraged you may be. Because what you do regardless of how big or small you may think it is, is important to someone, somewhere and in some time.
I have been trying to impact my industry for over 4 years and have become a self-proclaimed advocate for the local restaurants. Through Meetup.com, I have been organizing a Dining Group for the past year and every month am surrounded by a new diverse group people, all sharing a community dining experience. I am flustered with time and scheduling issues but have remained dedicated to this group and every month, just when I think I can't handle any more obligations, the Meetup comes up and it refreshes and invigorates me enough to handle another 4 weeks of hectic scheduling.
On the morning of our 12th group dinner, the Star News ran an article about the Meetup group and what it is all about!

So, when I sit back and wonder why I do what I do and what would happen if I stopped, I just need to remind myself - "Because One Person CAN Make a Difference" and in our case, it's a group of fanatical "Foodies" supporting locally owned restaurants.
Don't ever give up just because you feel like you tread water. Sometimes the fruits of your labor happen in another time zone rather than your own. Chances are that if you don't do what you do, well, If not you than who?
